History: A private house built in the 1890’s, it was restored and extended in 1926 and became a private school, was home to the Italian Embassy, was then abandoned for long time and now it is fully restored to rediscover and continue its historic vocation as a “public home” that it had so well carried out in the past…
Our desire to lovingly restore the the house, preserving its authenticity in transforming it into a guesthouse of exception, character and charm in the heart of Vichy, was realised with the cooperation of talented local artisans.
We have called it ‘ La Demeure d’Hortense in memory of Hortense.
But who is this « Hortense ? »
Hortense de Beauharnais had a facinating destiny. She was the daughter of Josephine de Beauharnais and was the mother of Napoléon III (second emperor of France) who developed Vichy during the years 1861 and 1866 to make Vichy the premier of European spa towns in its period.
Push open the front gate and enter the courtyard, under the canopy of the catalpa trees, hear the welcoming birdsong and absorb the soothing sound of the fountain....Home awaits you… Its sculpted façade and its wrought iron door with its authentic 1920’s stain glass… Inside, you’ll be charmed by the marble staircase and its wrought banister which leads you to your suite or bedroom.
Stain glass, ‘l’oeil de boeuf’ windows, geometrical designed slated roofs, are some pleasing glimpses upon which you will have time to dwell.
Period reception rooms with panelled walls and art-déco lighting, furniture a mix of antique and contempory invite you to relax and savour your breakfast or brunch. In the summer months your table is set on the sunny patio under the palm trees. When the weather is cold the library’s cosy firepace invites you to some quiet reading time..........
Your bedrooms or suites, romantic and contemporary styled, take you through time and to foreign places.
